Al-Farabi was called the Second Teacher — the first being Aristotle. Ibn Sina wrote that he read Aristotle's Metaphysics forty times without understanding it, until he bought al-Farabi's short commentary, On the Aims of the Metaphysics, for three dirhams in a booksellers' market, and it all came clear. Al-Farabi also wrote the Great Book of Music (Kitab al-Musiqa al-Kabir), for centuries the standard work on music theory in the Islamic world, and The Virtuous City, his answer to Plato's Republic. Here he is simply reading by candlelight, which is how all of it started.
