Kenichi Kuriyagawa was a Japanese graphic designer from Hokkaido, the northernmost of Japan’s main islands. He was known for creating posters for Japan's 1972 Winter Olympic Games in Sapporo, the first ever in Asia.

"One day at the end of summer, I went to Cape Elimo for an assignment. The wind had already given me a feeling of autumn, and purple thistle flowers were swaying. Several sheep were crouching in the grass, looking cold. From the tip of the cape, I walked down a steep, narrow path for about 100 meters to reach the rocky shore. From there, I crossed a precarious-looking temporary bridge and descended to the third large rock formation offshore. In the shadow of the rock formation, there was a sandy area of about 10 tsubo (approx. 33 sq. m), and the top was completely covered with seashells of all sizes. The amazing shapes and colors of the shells made me wonder if it was just a vision. I have decided to believe that I was the only one to see this precious scenery in the rough seas of Elimo, a place known for its dangerous sea conditions." — Kenichi Kuriyagawa

Kenichi Kuriyagawa

Kenichi Kuriyagawa left school at thirteen to paint cinema signs — the vast hand-lettered boards above theatre entrances in Sapporo and Otaru. He never went to art school. What he learned in those years was how a picture is composed for a screen: the long shot, the low horizon, the light falling hard across a scene. He spent the rest of his life applying it to Hokkaido.

He won the World Tourism Poster Competition in Lisbon in 1953, and again in Vienna in 1956. He drew bid posters for three Olympic Games. In 1967, out of more than seven thousand submissions, the prefecture chose his design for its flag — it still flies over Hokkaido. By the end they called him the father of Hokkaido design, and the island's museums hold over 250 of his works.

"I love the trees, the leaves, the flowers, the birds of my land, and I have a deep affection for every nameless wild plant and its modest, simple, delicate flower."

These silkscreens came late. He made them in 1988, at seventy-seven, having just come through eye surgery — the series was made, in his words, "while savoring the joy of regaining my eyesight."
