George Abramidze
George Abramidze makes ordinary things come alive. Working from Tbilisi, the ancient capital of the Republic of Georgia, he moves between surreal figuration and pure abstraction — dreamlike fish, abstract canvases, scenes of Georgian life, and the series he's best known for: the "dancing houses" of his hometown. He takes the crooked old houses of Tbilisi, with their carved balconies and centuries of leaning into one another, and gives them feeling — they have moods and friendships, they dance and lean and drink, and still they hold their form. The houses are also a study in form: paintings that behave like sculptures on canvas, where a curved line or the texture of stucco changes the character of the work. Across every subject his instinct is the same: to find the life inside a thing and bring it to the surface, carrying the warmth of Niko Pirosmani — the beloved painter on Georgia's one-lari note — into a contemporary, surreal register.
That range comes out of a serious international career. Born in Georgia in 1966, Abramidze trained at the Kharkiv State Institute of Arts in Ukraine and graduated from the Tbilisi State Academy of Arts in 1993, and has exhibited across Europe since 1989 — in Georgia, Germany, Greece, Turkey, and the Netherlands. He lived and worked in Berlin for a period and is a member of Germany's Federal Association of Artists (BBK), the Artists' Union of Georgia, and the International Federation of Artists under UNESCO. Of his recent City of Love series, he says the modern world has lost "this lightness, tenderness, genuine sincerity, subtlety, and ease" — which his paintings try to bring back.
George Abramidze holds a special place at Art House SF: he was the very first artist the gallery represented, discovered on a 2018 trip to Tbilisi. His paintings now hang in private and public collections across Europe, Asia, and the United States, reaching American collectors in sixteen states.
