Kenichi Kuriyagawa worked in Sapporo through the 1950s and 60s, producing silkscreens in the sōsaku hanga tradition of artist-made prints. He drew the first poster for the Sapporo Snow Festival in 1950. His prints are not mid century modern in style. They are mid century, made by hand, in the decade the movement was forming. Those works are dated and documented on each product page.
The contemporary side of this collection is a small group of works whose formal language lands in the same territory — faceted geometric planes, blocked color laid down in grids and bands, hard edges without gradient. These artists are not imitating a period. They arrived at the same solutions.
