Eclectic wall art — Tsholo Motong's shweshwe fabric collage portrait, detail

Eclectic Wall Art — Original Paintings and Prints

Eclectic wall art from seven countries. A shweshwe fabric collage from Soweto, a thangka painted in Upper Mustang, a Bukharan miniature on Samarkand mulberry paper, a Hokkaido silkscreen, an Icelandic abstract built from volcanic rock and black sand. Nothing here was made to match anything else.

Eclectic rooms work when each piece can hold its own wall, and they fail when everything is chosen from the same catalog. That is the one advantage of buying from people rather than a print library: these ten artists have never met, work in eight different materials, and answer to no shared aesthetic. Every piece is an original or a limited edition, framed in our San Francisco gallery before it ships.

How to build an eclectic wall

Pick one piece as the anchor and hang it slightly off-center. Vary the scale sharply — a small dense work next to a large quiet one reads as intentional, while five medium pieces read as indecision. Keep the frames in two finishes at most. Let the subjects clash; let the palettes overlap in one color.
