Art House SF welcomes Yowsaku Sekino

We are pleased to welcome Yowsaku Sekino to our gallery!

Yowsaku is a contemporary Japanese woodblock master who lives in Tokyo, Japan.  He's the son of another famous woodblock master, Junichiro Sekino, but he became an artist rather late in his life.

Many of his prints stand out for his application of gold and platinum leaf as highlights and the technically difficult application of watercolor inks onto metal leaf, as in the below print.

At the 2015 opening reception of the 60th exhibition of the CWAJ, Empress Michiko purchased his print "Sakura (Cherry Blossoms)" for the Imperial Palace.

Max Khusid was introduced to the work of Yowsaku Sekino during his trip to Japan in May of 2024.  He was impressed by the mix of traditional European and Japanese style in his work.  Yowsaku's work is influenced by the European Art Nouveau style in its decorativeness, natural curves, flowers, and patterns.  His use of gold, opulent, rich, and warm colors goes beyond typical Japanese woodblock printmaking.
Art House SF plans to organize a solo exhibit of Yowsaku's work in early 2025.
